Top FAQs - Bottle & Cup
We cannot provide an exact number of folds, as durability depends on factors such as frequency of use, exposure to heat or UV, and how carefully the products are folded.
What we can say is that both the Cup and the Bottle are made from materials chosen for their high mechanical strength and reliable folding performance. Our testing includes pressure inflation, material twisting, and drop tests, and the products perform very well across these parameters.
For the Origami Bottle → Version 2 offers improved durability and drop resistance compared to Version 1.
V1 is not drop-resistant, so extra care is recommended.
Origami Cup
The Origami Cup is made from a premium thermoplastic polymer blend (TPS, PP/SEBS), developed by a leading German materials company (Kraiburg TPE). It is BPA-free, BPS-free, and food-safe for both hot and cold beverages, and milk fatty foods. The lid is made of polypropylene (PP) with a silicone gasket, and the optional sleeve and straw are made of durable, food-contact-safe TPE and silicone.
Origami Bottle
There are two versions of the Origami Bottle, each made with different materials:
Version 1 is made with a bio-based polymer derived from rapeseed, developed by a Dutch company Envalior (ex-DSM). It is BPA- and BPS-free, food-safe, and free from chemical leaching. FDA/EU certified.
Version 2 is made from the same materia as the cup - TPS, PP/SEBS. It is BPA- and BPS-free, food-safe, and chosen for its higher rigidity, strength, and long-term fold resistance. The bottle also features a thick, durable plastic neck that replaces the metal neck from Version 1.
*Note on microplastics: We know this is a growing concern. While no standardized lab test currently exists for microplastic leaching from reusable containers, our materials are injection-molded (not thermoformed or layered like disposable plastics where microplastics leaching occurs). We’ve taken every measure to ensure structural integrity - including at the folding lines. We work with certified, long-term tested materials and suppliers, and consult with materials experts to stay ahead of evolving standards.
The folding creases are on the outside, while the inside surface is smooth and glossy for easier cleaning. Although the products are dishwasher-safe, we recommend using a bottle brush or sponge for optimal cleaning results. Always air dry thoroughly before folding and storing.
Before First Use: For more sensitive individuals, Origami Bottle V2 may have a stronger initial odour that fades with washing and use. We recommend giving the bottle/cup several soapy hot washes and letting it air dry fully between uses. For faster results, soak the bottle/cup in hot, soapy water and leave it overnight.
Weekly Cleaning: Clean it with a bottle brush and the cup with a sponge for best results; avoid leaving liquids inside for long periods. Always air dry completely before folding or storing.
Dishwasher-safe: Top rack only, gentle cycle (max 65°C / 149°F), fragrance-free detergent.
Origami Cup
The Cup is suitable for both hot and cold drinks – coffee, tea, juice, water, and even cocktails/beer.
- Use the protective sleeve when handling hot liquids.
- Avoid closing the top-flip lid when the beverage is above ~70°C (150°F) – steam pressure can build up, which may pop the lid open and potentially damage the locking mechanism over time.
- The Cup can be used for carbonated or fermented drinks – just keep the top lid open to let the pressure escape, especially with highly fizzy beverages.
- The Cup is microwave-safe.
Origami Bottle - The Bottle is designed for still water only. While you can technically use it for other drinks like coffee or tea, we don’t recommend it - these beverages are harder to clean out.
- DO NOT use the bottle with carbonated water. Carbonation creates high pressure, which inflates the bottle and can potentially burst it.
- Hot water: The Origami Bottle is safe for hot water, and there is no chemical leaching. If you use it for hot water, we recommend that you do not touch the hot surface to avoid burns. Use the cap ring instead.
The Origami Bottle V2 keeps the same size, shape, folding design, and functionality as V1, so it will look and feel the same in your hand. The key difference is the material: V2 is made from a premium thermoplastic polymer blend developed by a leading German company, offering greater durability, drop resistance, and longevity compared to V1’s bio-based rapeseed polymer from Envalior (ex-DSM) in the Netherlands.
Key differences:
• Material durability: V2 is more resistant to drops and deformation, making it better for long-term daily use.
• Neck: V2 features a thick plastic neck for lighter weight and improved performance, replacing V1’s stainless steel neck.
• Folding lifespan: Both versions are designed for thousands of folds, but V2’s material is stronger in the thinner folding areas.
Note on initial odour of V2
The new material of V2 may have a stronger manufacturing odor at first compared to V1. This is temporary and will fade with usage and washing. We recommend giving the bottle several thorough washes with warm, soapy water and letting it air dry fully between uses. For faster results, soak it a few times in soapy hot water and leave it overnight.
Folding: Bottle & Cup
Yes, it says FOLD — not collapse or squish. Folding it correctly means longer life and better performance. Watch the explainer video first and then follow these steps:
- Remove the cap and hold the bottle from the bottom
- Press along the horizontal lines (not the X-lines) from bottom to top — three folds in total.
- Compress to push out air and tighten the cap.
First, make sure to watch the explainer video — it covers all the key details for using your Origami Cup and its accessories.
To fold your cup, make sure it's empty. Тhen follow these steps:
1. Open the top-flip drinking cover of the lid and hold the bottom of the cup.
2. Press the STRAIGHT creases on the cup body in sequence.
3. Compress the cup fully, remove air, and close the top flip.
If you use it with care, the Origami Bottle and Cup can last for years. Even the thinnest parts between folding lines can take thousands of folding cycles.

-Hot water: The Origami Bottle is safe for hot water and there is no chemical leaching. If you use it for hot water we recommend that you do not touch the hot surface to avoid burns. Use the cap ring instead.
Yes, but please AVOID closing the top-flip drinking part of the lid when the liquid is above ~70°C (150°F). Steam builds up pressure inside, which pops the lid open and can potentially damage the lid mechanism. Let the drink cool slightly before closing the upper lid part. Always use the protective sleeve when handling hot liquids.
You can keep your bottle/cup in the fridge. We DO NOT recommend putting it in the freezer, especially when filled with more than 30% of its capacity. As with any other container, the water will expand in volume and can break it.
No, the Origami Bottle & Cup are not isothermal. This can be achieved only with double-wall stainless steel vessels. Unfortunately, no material currently available has the properties to fold and be isothermal at the same time.
Bottle - no, it's NOT microwave-safe. Do NOT put it in microwaves or ovens.
Cup - yes, it's microwave safe, just make sure that there are NO metal parts, such as a carabiner.
We don’t recommend placing either product loosely in a bag near electronics or valuables — accidents can happen if they’re squeezed or compressed.
Cup
The Origami Cup’s lid is leakproof under normal use, such as carrying it by hand or in a car cup holder. However, if compressed, some leakage may occur. Always ensure the top lid is fully closed and the internal gasket is correctly positioned and firmly pressed in place.
Bottle
The Origami Bottle is leakproof when properly closed, making it safe for everyday use, like carrying by hand or storing upright in a bag or side pocket. Still, avoid tossing it loosely in a bag with valuables, as heavy pressure may cause leakage. Always check the cap is tightly closed and the silicone gasket is properly seated inside the cap.
After each use, we recommend cleaning and drying your bottle or cup thoroughly. You can store it folded or unfolded — both are fine. If kept folded for a long time, it may take a little longer to regain its full shape. In that case, simply pour in warm water to help it return to normal.

YES, whenever you can. After use, we recommend cleaning and drying your Bottle or Cup thoroughly before storing. This prevents residual moisture and odors from building up.
Bottle - yes, you can remove the silicone isolation gasket from the cap and clean both parts separately. It is not necessary to do this every time you clean your bottle.
Cup - we don’t recommend removing the gasket often, as putting it back can be a bit tricky. Only remove it if you feel it needs a deeper clean.
Specific Use Cases & Issues
Cup
- Make sure the lid is properly tightened. To do this, align the two small lines on the lid and the cup body — they should match as closely as possible; it might not be perfect. This ensures the lid is centered and sealed. See this in the explainer video.
- Once aligned, fold the cup, press out any trapped air, and lock it with the flip mechanism.
- If you have removed the gasket, check that it’s firmly back in place. Avoid frequent removal, as it may stretch and cause small leaks.
- When sealed correctly, the cup should stay folded airtight for hours.
Bottle
- Check the internal gasket in the cap. If removed, it must be placed back.
- Press the gasket’s edges firmly into the cap (a spoon can help) to restore the vacuum seal.
- Without the gasket properly fitted, the bottle may not hold its folded shape or could leak.
Pro tip: Always press out extra air before sealing — this helps both the Bottle and the Cup stay folded and compact longer.
Prior to using it for the first time, the bottle may have slight residual production odor, which disappears after several washings and use.
For more sensitive people, Origami Bottle V2 may have a stronger initial odor that fades with cleaning and usage. We recommend giving the bottle/cup several soapy hot washes and letting it air dry fully between uses. For faster results, soak the bottle/cup in hot, soapy water and leave it overnight.
To make sure that the bottle remains odor-free you need to wash it regularly and to dry it after use.
Most leaks are caused by the cap not being fully closed or the internal gasket being out of place. If you have removed the gasket, make sure to reinstall it firmly along the inner rim of the cap. You can use a spoon to gently press the gasket back into the upper groove to ensure a tight seal.
If the leak persists, please contact us at shop@difold.com with details and attach photos or a short video so we can assist you further.
When the bottle/cup is exposed to cold temperatures, the material freezes and may break if pressure is applied. We recommend waiting for the material to reach room temperature before folding it again.
Yes. Both the Origami Bottle and Cup are airport security–friendly, as long as you empty them before screening. They’re a great way to avoid single-use plastics while traveling.
One thing to note: changes in altitude cause the air inside to expand or compress, making the Bottle or Cup look slightly inflated or compressed. This is normal; simply open the cap to equalize the pressure.
Other
Yes. Both the Origami Bottle and Origami Cup are protected by design patents, and our stronger protection comes from a utility patent. This covers a wide spectrum of foldable geometrical patterns — essentially the DNA of our products.
We’ve invested in these patents because our long-term vision goes far beyond bottles and cups. This "origami invention" allows us to create an entire range of foldable, reusable products that can replace single-use plastics and even become part of future refillable packaging systems.
Unfortunately, the market is also flooded with cheap silicone imitations of unknown origin, especially for bottles. While we actively work to remove knock-offs from major marketplaces, it’s a challenge in today’s global e-commerce environment. That’s why we also aim to educate people to recognize and support real innovation — inventions made with care, dedication, and a mission to make reuse simple and impactful.
The easiest way to spot the difference is the material.
👉 You can check out our overview post with some of the most common knock-offs, and dive deeper into our side-by-side comparison post for a closer look at how the Original Origami Bottle stands apart.
- The Original Origami Bottle is made of advanced polymers (TPC for Version 1, TPS for Version 2). It’s rigid, sturdy, and patented — designed to hold its shape and last. You’ll find the DiFOLD logo and material code engraved at the bottom.
- Knock-offs are always made of soft silicone. They’re flimsy, unstable, collapse easily, and often leak. They usually sell for $5–20, sometimes with random straps or details, and come without any food-safety certifications.
We’ve seen a flood of these imitations on online marketplaces. We report and remove them whenever possible, but they continue to circulate. If you purchased one by mistake, we recommend asking the seller for a refund and reporting it.
If you’re unsure, you can always contact us at shop@difold.com with photos — we’ll gladly confirm if your bottle is original.
Choosing the original means supporting years of development, patented design, and a mission-driven company working to replace single-use plastics with smarter, reusable solutions.
We design our products with their full lifecycle in mind, choosing recyclable materials and avoiding silicone, which is not recyclable in standard systems.
All Origami products are made to fit into common recycling streams. Still, recycling rules vary from country to country and even municipality to municipality, so it’s best to double-check locally. Below is our general guidance:

- Separate the plastic body (TPC, TPE-E, No. 7) from the stainless steel neck insert.
Plastic body: plastic or general waste container - Metal neck & cap (stainless steel): metal recycling
- Silicone gaskets: general waste
Origami Bottle V2 - Main body & rigid plastic neck (TPS, PP-compatible): plastic recycling
- Cap (plastic): plastic recycling
Silicone gaskets: general waste
Origami Cup
- Cup body & lid (TPS, PP-compatible): plastic recycling
- Silicone gaskets: general waste
Our product design, development, and prototyping take place in Sofia, Bulgaria — that’s where our team is based.
Production is carried out in Shenzhen, China, in a factory certified with ISO 9001 and BSCI standards. Fulfilment happens from multiple locations to serve our customers efficiently.
Our production partner has been one of our biggest partner, helping us bring our products to life. The Origami Bottle and Cup may look simple, but manufacturing them is a complex process, and without their expertise, we couldn’t have achieved the same speed, scale, and budget efficiency within Europe as a startup.
Looking ahead, we'd happy to explore a second production base in Europe to optimize shipping, reduce CO₂ emissions, and further lower our production footprint.
